There are some pieces that instantly make a kitchen feel a little more like an old country kitchen, and this wonderfully characterful wooden egg cupboard is one of them.

Made from wood and finished in a beautifully timeworn dark brown-black, the little freestanding cupboard has all the charm of an old farmhouse food safe. A chicken-wire front door opens to reveal two wooden egg racks, each holding six eggs individually – giving room for a full dozen.

It's the wonderfully imperfect finish that really makes this piece. Warm wood shows through around the edges and corners where the dark finish has worn away, giving it the relaxed, collected appearance we love in old country interiors.

The front is finished with a simple round wooden knob and traditional little wooden turn catch. Through the chicken-wire door, the eggs remain visible, turning something as ordinary as storing a dozen eggs into part of the kitchen display.

At 27cm high x 24cm wide x 15cm deep, it's substantial enough to make an impact but compact enough to sit comfortably on a kitchen worktop, dresser or pantry shelf.

Why We Like It

We love pieces that are both useful and beautiful, and this is exactly that.

Fill it with brown and white eggs and suddenly something completely ordinary becomes part of the room. The dark distressed timber looks particularly lovely alongside old French stoneware, wooden chopping boards, linen and other pieces collected over time.

The chicken-wire front is a lovely detail too, giving it the unmistakable feel of a miniature farmhouse food safe.

Condition

Presented in characterful pre-owned condition with surface wear, marks and rubbing to the dark finish, particularly around the edges and corners. These signs of use contribute beautifully to its rustic appearance.
