Vintage Wire Egg Gathering Basket – Blue Grey Farmhouse Egg Collecting Basket

A wonderfully characterful piece of vintage kitchenalia, made for one of the simplest jobs of country life – gathering the morning eggs.

This vintage wire egg gathering basket has a lovely rounded form, constructed from closely spaced metal wire with a tall carrying handle wrapped in distinctive coiled wire.

Finished in a soft blue-grey painted colour, the basket has developed small areas of wear and age across the wirework, giving it just the sort of timeworn character we look for in old practical pieces.

The open wire construction was particularly suited to collecting and storing freshly laid eggs, allowing air to circulate around them while providing a lightweight basket that could easily be carried around the hen house or farmyard.

Today, it makes a fantastic piece of French country and farmhouse kitchen décor. Fill it with eggs and leave it on the kitchen worktop, use it as part of a rustic pantry display, or simply enjoy it as an interesting piece of vintage kitchenalia.

It would look particularly good alongside old stoneware, wooden chopping boards, French linens and other collected kitchen pieces.

Why We Like It

It's the shape that really makes this basket.
Rather than the more familiar rectangular or oval wire egg baskets, this one has an almost spherical body, with the wire gradually widening through the centre before drawing back in towards the opening.
Then there's that wonderful spring-like coiled handle. It's such an unusual detail and gives the basket a slightly industrial quality that works beautifully against softer rustic kitchen pieces.
The muted blue-grey finish is another bonus. It's neutral enough to sit comfortably in a country kitchen but gives the piece much more personality than plain galvanised wire.
And unlike purely decorative reproductions, this is the sort of piece that looks better because it isn't perfect – the little signs of age and use are part of its appeal.
