A lovely piece of Devon pottery with a story behind it, this vintage Royal Barum Ware jug brings together the warm, earthy character of traditional studio pottery with a wonderfully nostalgic piece of British kitchen design.

Made in a rich terracotta-coloured clay, the jug has a softly rounded body, generous curved handle and pronounced pouring lip. The upper rim and interior are finished in a deep glossy brown glaze, contrasting beautifully with the warm matt finish of the body.

But it's the decoration on the front that really makes this one special.

Printed with a traditional crest and the words “MILK – Royal Barum Ware”, the design also references C. H. Brannam Ltd of Barnstaple and the Litchdon Potteries, Devon – names closely associated with the celebrated pottery tradition of North Devon.

It's exactly the sort of piece that looks at home in a relaxed country kitchen: standing beside old wooden boards and stoneware, displayed on a dresser, or simply filled with a few stems or dried flowers.

And unlike purely decorative reproduction kitchenware, this has the character that comes from having already lived a life.

Why We Like It

For us, it's the combination of the terracotta clay and dark treacle-brown glaze that makes this jug.
The colours are wonderfully warm and understated, while the old-fashioned MILK typography and Royal Barum Ware decoration give it just enough detail without making it overly fussy.
Turn it around and the decoration disappears completely, leaving a beautifully simple piece of rustic pottery – almost like having two different looks in one jug.
It would sit particularly well amongst old wooden kitchenware, cream stoneware and natural linens.
A Little About Royal Barum Ware
Royal Barum Ware is associated with the historic Brannam pottery of Barnstaple in North Devon, a pottery tradition dating back into the 19th century.
The Brannam name became particularly associated with distinctive art pottery and decorative earthenware produced in Barnstaple, and the Royal Barum name continued that connection with the area's long ceramic tradition.
The references to C. H. Brannam Ltd, Barnstaple and Litchdon Potteries, Devon on this jug are therefore more than simply decorative wording – they connect the piece directly with one of North Devon's best-known pottery names.

From the Brocante Trail

Some of our favourite finds aren't elaborate or precious – they're the simple pieces that once belonged to everyday life.
A milk jug sitting on a kitchen table, a loaf on the board, stoneware beside the stove. Objects made to be used rather than admired behind glass.
This Royal Barum Ware jug captures that feeling beautifully.
Today, it has become just as appealing as a decorative piece: a little fragment of traditional Devon pottery that brings warmth, texture and history to a modern country kitchen.
Every treasure has a story. This one found us on the Brocante trail. Now it’s waiting to become part of yours.
