A beautifully substantial Occold Pottery stoneware jug, full of the earthy colour, texture and individuality that makes British studio pottery so appealing.
Standing approximately 24 cm tall, the jug has a tall cylindrical body with subtle throwing rings, a generously curved handle and a softly shaped pouring lip. The lower body is finished in a wonderfully tactile creamy oatmeal glaze, contrasting with the rich honey, caramel and deep brown tones around the neck, rim and interior.
The glaze has a beautifully organic quality, with subtle variations and speckling throughout that give the piece plenty of depth and character.
Turned around, it bears the impressed Occold Pottery maker's mark below the handle.
Although originally conceived as a functional jug, we think this is particularly good as a decorative piece. Fill it with seasonal flowers, dried hydrangeas or garden foliage, or simply display it empty on an old pine dresser, kitchen table or open shelf.
Why We Like It
It's the combination of shape, scale and glaze that makes this one work so well.
The creamy stoneware body keeps it wonderfully neutral, while the deep brown glaze around the top gives it warmth and stops it feeling too plain. The exaggerated curved handle and slightly irregular pouring lip also give it that unmistakable handmade quality.
It's exactly the sort of pottery that looks at home among old wooden boards, baskets, linens and other pieces collected over time.
