A charming pair of traditional French rillettes pots, with beautiful rustic glazes and a little piece of French culinary history.
Straight from the world of French country kitchens, these two lovely vintage stoneware pots are believed to have originally been used for presenting or packaging rillettes, a traditional French speciality.
Each pot features a wonderfully rounded shape, a gently flared rim and a distinctive glazed finish blending soft sage green, subtle turquoise-blue and rich earthy brown.
The colours flow beautifully into one another, creating a mottled, almost watercolour-like effect, with darker brown glazing around the rims and inside the pots.
Both feature an embossed oval emblem on the front, believed to read Clos St Lambert, adding an interesting connection to their French origins.
A Little French Culinary History
Rillettes are a traditional French speciality, usually made from slowly cooked and shredded meat, often pork or duck, preserved in fat.
Historically, rillettes were commonly presented and sold in earthenware or stoneware pots, which could then be kept and reused in the home.
These charming little vessels are believed to be examples of that tradition.
Today, they make wonderful decorative pieces for a French country kitchen, bringing a little of the atmosphere of a traditional French charcuterie or village épicerie into the home.
Beautiful as Rustic Pinch Pots
Although believed to have originally been rillettes pots, their compact size and attractive shape also make them ideal for displaying as rustic French pinch pots.
Imagine them sitting beside an old wooden chopping board, surrounded by French stoneware jugs, antique kitchen utensils and well-loved linens.
They would look equally lovely on open kitchen shelving or a farmhouse dresser, where their unusual colouring and decorative markings can be appreciated.
Their versatility is part of their charm, offering an authentic piece of French kitchen history that fits beautifully into today's country-inspired interiors.
Why We Like Them
It's the combination of colour, shape and history that makes this pair so appealing.
The soft green and turquoise glazing is particularly attractive, especially where it meets the warm brown around the rims.
We also love their little embossed Clos St Lambert emblems, a lovely reminder of their likely original purpose.
They're the sort of everyday French pottery pieces that might once have been overlooked but now make wonderfully characterful additions to a rustic kitchen.
And because they're a matching pair, they look especially lovely displayed together.
