Vintage Blue & White Ceramic Cheese Dish & Cover – Floral Cheese Keeper with Branch Handle

A wonderfully decorative vintage blue and white ceramic cheese dish and cover, combining classic floral decoration with a beautifully aged crackle glaze.

The piece consists of a generously sized shaped serving plate and a tall domed cover, richly decorated with deep cobalt-blue flowers and scrolling foliage. Against the warm ivory ground, the blue decoration has that timeless look associated with traditional European blue and white tableware.

One of its most distinctive features is the wonderfully sculptural branch-form handle sweeping across the top of the cover. Finished in rich cobalt blue, it makes a striking contrast against the floral body and gives the piece a particularly unusual silhouette.

Across both the cover and plate is an extensive network of fine glaze crazing, which has mellowed with age and gives the surface wonderful character. Rather than looking pristine and modern, it has exactly the timeworn appearance that makes old kitchen and tableware so appealing.

Remove the cover and the matching base is almost as decorative in its own right, with large floral sprays positioned across the shaped platter.

The underside carries a small blue painted or printed symbol, although we haven't been able to confidently identify this with a particular maker or pottery. We therefore prefer to leave the piece unattributed rather than make an uncertain attribution.

At approximately 26 cm long, it has plenty of presence and would look fantastic displayed on an old kitchen dresser, sideboard or open shelving amongst ironstone, transferware and other collected pieces.

It could equally be used as an impressive centrepiece for a cheese board when entertaining.

Covered cheese dishes were once a familiar sight on European dining tables, allowing cheese to be presented while keeping it protected between servings.

Today they've become wonderful pieces of decorative kitchenalia in their own right.
This example has particularly strong French country and brocante appeal, pairing beautifully with old confit pots, ironstone, linen, wooden boards and other blue-and-white ceramics.

Display it complete as a statement piece, or remove the cover and use the beautifully decorated base independently for serving.
