Mont Saint-Michel at Sunset celebrates one of the most recognisable sights in France. Situated just off the Normandy coast, Mont Saint-Michel is famous for its extraordinary position within a tidal bay. At high tide it can appear almost completely surrounded by water, while at low tide enormous expanses of sand are revealed. Above the fortified village rises the great abbey, creating the unmistakable silhouette that has fascinated pilgrims, travellers, artists and photographers for centuries. This composition captures the Mont during the warm light of evening, when the stone takes on beautiful golden tones and the surrounding water reflects the architecture and sky. The result is an image that feels peaceful and dramatic at the same time.

Artwork Inspiration

This artwork is inspired by the extraordinary architecture and landscape of Mont Saint-Michel in Normandy. Rather than treating it simply as a landmark, the composition focuses on the relationship between the Mont and its surroundings the vast sky, tidal sands, water and changing light that make every view of it slightly different. The warm sunset palette gives the scene a softer and more romantic quality while retaining the imposing character of the medieval architecture. It is designed to evoke that wonderful feeling of approaching Mont Saint-Michel and seeing the abbey rising above the horizon.
