Celebrate one of the old orchard’s more unusual treasures with Les Nèfles, an atmospheric illustrated French fruit print devoted to the traditional medlar.

Warm russet-brown medlars nestle amongst richly detailed deep green leaves and delicate white blossom, their distinctive open calyx giving the fruit its unmistakable character. A cut medlar at the foot of the composition reveals the fascinating interior and seeds, giving the artwork the appearance of a beautifully detailed traditional botanical study.

The restrained palette of earthy brown, olive and forest green against a softly aged cream background gives this print a particularly authentic old-orchard feeling.

The French inscription “Trésors du Verger à l’Ancienne – Douces, Fondantes & Rares Délicatesses” translates approximately as Treasures of the Traditional Orchard – Sweet, Melting & Rare Delicacies — an especially fitting description for a fruit that was once familiar throughout Europe but is now rarely seen.
