Clusters of chestnuts grow amongst deep green serrated leaves, some still enclosed within their wonderfully textured spiny burrs while others have split open to reveal the glossy mahogany-brown nuts inside. Fallen chestnuts arranged beneath the branch complete the composition, creating the feeling of an old botanical study of the tree from fruit to harvest.

The inscription “Trésors du Verger à l’Ancienne – Douces, Fondantes & Saveurs de l’Automne” evokes Treasures of the Traditional Orchard – Sweet, Tender & Flavours of Autumn.

With its deep woodland greens, warm chestnut browns and soft cream background, this is one of the most naturally rustic prints in the collection and particularly well suited to a traditional French country kitchen.

Why We Love It

This print has a completely different character from the brighter summer fruits in the collection.

The chestnuts have a beautiful polished mahogany colour, while their extraordinary spiny cases introduce texture that immediately distinguishes the artwork from the softer orchard fruits.

We particularly like the open burr near the top of the composition. Seeing those glossy chestnuts nestled inside their fiercely prickled outer case tells the story of the fruit beautifully.

There is also something wonderfully evocative about chestnuts in France — autumn markets, woodland walks, baskets of freshly gathered nuts and the smell of roasting chestnuts as the weather becomes colder.

For a collection displayed throughout the year, Les Châtaignes gives the range a distinctly autumnal element and works especially well with the darker greens and earthy colours found in traditional French interiors.
